The National Green Building Standards: USA
The National Green Building Standard (NGBS) is the only residential building rating system accredited by the American National Standards Institute, and includes the installation of a food waste disposer as a criteria for the environmental rating of new-build and refurbishment projects.
NGBS covers the design and construction of all types of residential buildings, renovations, and land developments, and operates on a point assignment system to calculate the environmental rating of a project. The standard assesses lot design, preparation and development; resource, energy and water efficiency; indoor environmental quality; and operation, maintenance and building owner education.
Including food waste disposers in a project earns a point towards certification, under NGBS “New Construction Projects”, Chapter 6 “Resource Recovery”, Practice 607.2, and “Remodelling of Functional Areas”, “Kitchen Remodels”, Practice 12.2.6.4.
